Yannis Ioannidis
Candidate for ACM President

I am honored to be seeking a second term as President of the Association of Computing Machinery in this year’s elections. I have been a member of ACM since my graduate school times, and I have served it in many roles, including ACM President (1 July 2022 - present), ACM Secretary-Treasurer, ACM SIGMOD Chair, and ACM Europe Council member. I seek the ACM members’ votes for a second time to be able to complete the work related to 'ACM 4.0', my main presidential initiative, which aims at drafting a long-term strategic plan for ACM.

Details of 'ACM 4.0' appear in my Feb 2023 CACM column “To the Members of ACM”. Briefly, it consists of 10 Presidential Task Forces (PTFs) that are being set up to investigate several critical and urgent issues and recommend action plans to address them. Their main objectives are as follows:

  • Membership Model: Devise a new membership model, inclusive of all ACM beneficiaries
  • Globalization: Increase the global footprint of ACM, serving diverse regional needs
  • Youthification: Attract and serve the needs of young computing professionals
  • UN Sustainable Development Goals: Facilitate computing-dependent efforts on the 17 SDGs
  • ACM Code of Ethics and Social Responsibility: Connect the principles in the Code with a computing professional’s everyday life and identify ways that they may be applied
  • Open Science: Adopt Open Access policies and supporting Open Science methods in all steps of the computing research lifecycle
  • Products and Services Portfolio: Perform a SWOT or other similar analysis and reform the ACM offerings to better serve the different ACM communities’ needs
  • Financial Model: Establish a new financial model as the income streams of ACM change
  • Bylaws: Reexamine ACM governance so that the organization’s operations better match the evolving challenges around it
  • Regional Offices: Employ ACM staff in offices around the world, serving local needs

If reelected, in addition to the work around 'ACM 4.0', I will also continue several other activities that I consider critical for ACM to maintain its pioneering spirit and leadership in the field and increase its impact. These include attending the ten biggest and several smaller ACM/SIG conferences and non-ACM events, meeting with academic and industry leaders, and presenting ACM at universities and student chapters globally, putting my finger on the pulse of the community.
