A Vision for Global Research Data Infrastructures

GRDI2020 - Towards a 10-Year Vision for Global Research Data Infrastructures, is an Europe-driven initiative proposed as Coordination Action under the Seventh Framework Programme FP7 funded by GÉANT & Infrastructure unit of DG-INFSO of the European Commission(1 February 2010 - 24 months).

GRDI2020 is supporting the objectives of the call “INFRA-2009.3: Studies conferences & coordination actions supporting policy development, including international co-operation for e-Infrastructures” in specifically contributing to the definition and development of a European policy for sustainable Global Research Data Infrastructures, thereby aiding in the build-up of the European Research Area.

Main Goals

GRDI2020 aims at outlining the main priorities in the field of Global Research Data Infrastructures in a GRDI Roadmap, anchored on sound technical recommendations produced by two GRDI2020 Working Groups. Its outreach series of international events and thematic working meetings will increase the ability of the research community, industry, and academia to influence the development of a competitive global ICT infrastructure beyond i2010. The project will also build a qualified, trans-European Research Data Infrastructure community whose members will be inspired by common use cases and will share experiences, plan, innovate, and reach out together, with strong commitment to tackle the main relevant technical challenges.

In more detail, GRDI2020 seeks to:

  • Bring research, scholarly-communication, and digital-archive communities together to foster and engage in understanding the necessary technology and applications;
  • Raise a strong voice in shaping European and global priorities while emphasising the need for interoperability;
  • Offer researchers opportunities of discovering new services for exploiting the wealth of data available, for effective production of new knowledge;
  • Synchronise requirements and challenges across thematic communities, and bridge differences between the needs of research, education, and innovation activities;
  • Create and coordinate international expert groups to address specific challenges and solutions regarding technological and organisational aspects of GRDIs;
  • Raise the value of significant European innovations the exist in the area of Data Infrastructures so that they may be more influential and better recognised globally. The GRDI2020 Roadmap will set up a framework for delivering Data Infrastructures that meet the needs of the Research Community. Whether in its entirety or in self-contained parts (e.g., focused surveys), it will be made publicly available and distributed to major stakeholders, researchers, practitioners, and funding agencies across the globe for potential co-operation opportunities.
